Do you have 10 weeks this summer to work in a transformative tech inclusion and youth empowerment program in a paid role?
Hack the Hood, one of the Bay area’s most innovative tech inclusion programs, is looking for Technical Instructors to work with our boot camp teams. We’re hiring tech people with front-end skills and experience teaching to join our boot camp teams in Oakland and San Francisco, and be our strongest technical resources in the field. If you have solid skills in web design, CSS, HTML, and Javascript and enjoy working with bright, motivated young people who are learning about the tech ecosystem at the same time they are building tech skills and creating web sites for real world small business clients, get in touch! SEE THE JOB DESCRIPTION HERE BACKGROUND ON HACK THE HOOD AND THIS ROLE Founded in 2013, Hack the Hood introduces low-income youth of color to basic coding and careers in tech and connects them with training, mentors and resources so they can move toward tech entrepreneurship and careers in tech. Over the course of our bootcamps and our follow-up Accelerator, A-team programs, Hack the Hood participants evolve into young web development professionals with strong education and career goals. Instructors will work with our programming and instructional teams to improve and deliver the technical bootcamp instruction and will be in the classroom as the lead web development and technical resource 4 days a week during the program. The role includes teaching clinics and workshops on building websites with Weebly, using HTML and CSS, SEO, using social media for business, and introductions to mobile OS, Android, and basic coding languages (PHP, JS, Python/Ruby). The Technical Teaching Instructor will also be a coach and resource for young people who are interested in careers in tech, studying CS, web and digital design, and online marketing in both college and certificate programs, and who are looking to build portfolios of work and career plans to advance their goals. They will offer small group and 1:1 mentoring to support youth. WHO IS A GOOD FIT FOR THIS ROLE? This is a terrific role for someone who is technically skilled and who would like to empower innovative young people of color to use technology to build careers and businesses. The best candidates will have solid, hands-on experience working in areas of tech that relate to the consumer and front-end focused curriculum of Hack the Hood, and the ability and patience to teach skills through partner programming and hands-on instruction, vs. online learning or lectures. Being a problem-solver, with experience with and empathy for urban youth, and the resiliency to work in a diverse team in a fast-paced, youth-focused environment is critical. The Instructor will combine team management skills and agile development skills with managing technical instruction and digital design, with support from a broader team. Successful candidates will have a zest for using social media and tech tools, and be comfortable with smart phones, apps, Agile/SCRUM methodology, Trello, Google Docs and other tools.
