ABOUT HACK THE HOOD
Our programs help low-income youth of color learn 21st century skills and launch tech careers through real-world project-based learning. During our 6-week bootcamps, youth get on-the-job training to build no-cost mobile-friendly websites for actual local small businesses. This helps young people learn the skills and form the relationships they need chart a course towards 21st century careers in tech, while at the same time helping local businesses in their neighborhoods reach new customers and increase profits. In 2016 we expanded to include year-round tech programming to our youth members, and now work with partners to reach youth and small businesses across Northern California.

Hack the Hood is looking for a Communications & Outreach Manager who can to take our efforts to the next level. We’re looking for someone who can balance strategy, creativity, clarity, and productivity. We want someone who can code switch for our various audiences, while at the same time always maintaining integrity and holding our mission and dedication to youth as paramount.
The Communications & Outreach Manager will be responsible for promoting Hack the Hood’s work and prompting action from youth, small businesses, technology professionals, non-profit partners, donors, and other stakeholders as we continue to grow as a regional organization. This position will help develop a strategic communications plan that supports program and fundraising objectives, and creatively engages our audiences via web, advertising, social media, email, presentations and more. The successful candidate will report to and partner with the Development Director, and work closely with many members of our growing team. We see the person in this role as the steward of the brand and voice of Hack the Hood across platforms, including written content, social media, newsletters, videos, and various graphic design projects. Our ideal candidate knows how to get the most out of Facebook, Twitter, and other popular platforms, but understands how different audience segments interact with information around web, mobile, and on the ground.
This is a full-time “hands-on” position, with opportunities to grow. The winning candidate will be a self-starter, collaborative, primarily working from our office in Oakland.
