We are seeking a Development Associate to support our fundraising and development team. You will be instrumental in accelerating our fundraising efforts by engaging in grant research and writing, relationship-building with donors, and preparing for our end-of-year campaign. Besides providing administrative and creative support, you’ll be a key force in creating new systems and processes to organize donor and grant communications while learning to fundraise for a $2 million organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grants cultivation
  • Research new funders online, at times using The Foundation Center
  • Keep our grants database updated with incoming data  
  • Work with the Development Director to rank potential funders and identify upcoming opportunities
  • Support with data entry as we move our systems into Salesforce

Events Management
  • Maintain the calendar of fundraising events
  • Coordinate event logistics and fundraising/communication materials
  • Attend events, track attendance, and represent Hack the Hood while tabling
  • Enter data after an event

Donor Development
  • Manage individual donor appreciation, including sending thank-you letters and keeping track of our list of major donors
  • Support creative and admin work on our online donation site, including setting up and customizing special campaign pages

At Hack the Hood we are providing real-world, hands-on learning opportunities and mentorship to under-resourced youth of color. We facilitate the learning and relationship-building required to chart a course towards 21st century careers in online technology and social media. We engage our participants in the context of their own community to build capital for themselves as well as for the local economy. Our 6-9 week boot camps and year-round membership programs train participants in basic computer skills, web marketing and promotion, search engine optimization (SEO), and website development, which they then use to build mobile-responsive web sites and listings for real small business clients from their own communities.

We are seeking a Communications Intern to helps us shape the stories we tell to the world. You will be a digital storyteller, helping create and deliver Hack the Hood’s content and channel strategy in support of program and fundraising objectives, and creatively engages our audiences across social platforms, web, email, presentations, and more. You will report to and partner with the Communications Manager, and work closely with our growing team. This is a great opportunity to gain experience working in a fast-pace nonprofit, where you’ll attain valuable knowledge in fundraising and youth development, along with marketing and communication skills.

The Day-To-Day
  • A commitment to work up to 15 hours per week until December 31, 2018
  • ​Work with the Communications Manager on developing a strategic communications plan to support our year-end fundraising campaign and Spring Bootcamp recruitment
  • Updating all Hack the Hood social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Managing communications calendar and related outreach

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development of a new model of engagement with and development of small and medium businesses with significant digital needs

As Case Manager, you will interface with our programs team to better engage participants of our six to nine week boot camps and year-round membership programs. You will be central in providing case management support to under-resourced youth of color enrolled in our programs.  As Case Manager, you will assess, problem solve, coach, provide support and referrals for youth experiencing barriers to education, which have included: housing, transportation, wardrobe, income supports/benefits, child-care, health/mental health services, etc. As care-provider for our participants, you will be a critical part of developing strong referral relationships with service providers across Oakland and Alameda County.

Hack the Hood project

The Evaluator will work closely with the Chief Innovation Officer, Hack the Hood (HTH) staff and a team of consultants to coordinate and oversee the evaluation strategy of an online video "mentor matrix" library that can be used in the context of relationship-based career coaching to enhance youth knowledge about tech careers and confidence in pursuing them. This career exploration tool will lift up the successes of professionals of color for youth to see. This is a new way to engage industry in the training and mentoring of a more inclusive future workforce. The video library will be part of a larger toolkit, that includes an online curriculum, research report and white paper. The finalized toolkit will be published online and shared with the wider field of workforce development agencies, community based organizations and tech companies.

Goals for the first 90 days:
  • Create evaluation strategy + tools
  • Manage evaluation timeline for project
  • Provide weekly updates to the Chief Innovation Officer and flag when any part of the timeline is getting off track.
  • Develop design and presentation ideas based on design research and youth inputs
  • Facilitation of 4 focus groups during project.  

Major Responsibilities:
  • Ability to design or create a means to gather, analyze and report evaluative information, both quantitative and qualitative,

Technical Teaching Fellow

Hack the Hood has a growing network of youth-focused partner organizations, tech companies, local government and young people ages 16-25 we are working with around the Bay area to scale our programs and bring our 6-week immersive bootcamp to local communities in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, the East Bay and the Central Valley.

Founded in 2013, Hack the Hood introduces low-income youth of color to basic coding and careers in tech and connects them with training, mentors and resources so they can move toward tech entrepreneurship and careers in tech. Over the course of our bootcamps and our after school coding programs, Hack the Hood participants evolve into young web development professionals with strong education and career goals.

For 2018, Hack the Hood is seeking to bring on Technical Teaching Fellows to work with us in our immersive 4-day a week, 6-week boot camps in summer of 2018 in Oakland.

Fellows will work with our opportunities, small business, and instruction teams to provide a high level of technical support within the classroom. The role includes teaching clinics and workshops on building websites with Weebly, using HTML and CSS, Javascript and preparing young people for testing and entry into coding boot camps and college CS courses.

The Technical Teaching fellow will also be a coach and resource for young people who are interested in careers in tech, studying CS, web and digital design, and online marketing in both college and certificate programs, and who are looking to build portfolios of work and career plans to advance their goals. They will offer small group and 1:1 mentoring to support youth.

WHO IS A GOOD FIT FOR THIS ROLE?
This is a terrific role for a technically skilled person who would like to empower innovative young people of color to use technology to build careers and businesses. The best candidates will have solid, hands-on experience working in areas of tech that relate to the consumer and front-end focused curriculum of Hack the Hood, and the ability and patience to teach skills through hands-on instruction.

Our best candidates will combine their professional experience and skills with some experience working with young people ages 16-25, ideally in a structured setting. Being a problem-solver, with experience with and empathy for urban youth, and the resiliency to work in a diverse team in a fast-paced, youth-focused environment is critical. The Fellow will combine team management skills and agile development skills with managing technical instruction and digital design, with support from a broader team. Successful candidates will have a zest for teaching basic coding languages to a diverse array of youth.

Successful candidates will also approach our community already understanding our principles of youth development, with demonstrated experience and/or empathy with our approach, or be able to show a strong readiness to learn.

Bootcamp Lead Instructor

Position: Bootcamp Lead Instructor

The boot camp lead instructor manages both the delivery of instruction, skills, and experiences in the Hack the Hood boot camp, and manages the core team working to provide transformative experiences for the youth during the program. The lead instructor is also a core ally and partner for the Small Business web development work that happens during boot camp.  The role includes teaching coding, project management, HTML/CSS and 21st century workplace skills to youth, evaluation and funder surveys, coaching and conducting portfolio reviews, managing other staff, working with volunteers and mentors, participating and preparing participants for tech company site visits and managing students’ development and execution of web sites for small business clients.

The successful candidate is energized to transform young people’s lives by exposing them to technology careers, coding skills, entrepreneurship and tech innovation. The lead instructor has experience teaching tech skills, some coding, design, and digital marketing curriculum for youth ages 15-24. The candidate also has youth development experience with strong classroom management skills. Successful candidates will have a zest for using social media and tech tools, and be comfortable with smart phones, apps, Google Docs and other tools. The successful candidate is both relationship and outcome driven, and an active problem-solver who enjoys relating to youth ages 16-25, and to adult allies. A social justice lens on tech inclusion is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the teaching of basic coding, web development, digital marketing and 21st century job skills to youth ages 16-25.

DESCRIPTION
Hack the Hood (HTH) seeks a contractor to serve as a Producer to produce, prototype and test an online video "
mentor matrix" library that can be used in the context of relationship-based career coaching to enhance youth knowledge about tech careers and confidence in pursuing them. The contractor will work with the Chief Innovation Officer, Hack the Hood staff and a team of consultants to create this career exploration tool that will lift up the successes of professionals of color for youth to see. This tool is a new way to engage industry in the training and mentoring of a more inclusive future workforce. The video library will be part of a larger toolkit, that includes an online curriculum, research report and white paper. The finalized toolkit will be published online and shared with the wider field of workforce development agencies, community based organizations and tech companies. The contractor will bring at least 4 years of experience, but will also participate in a user centered design training with the wider team to co-create a design plan for the project. 


The role will include participating in a user centered design training with the wider team to co-create a design plan for the project. Creating storyboards, writing scripts, scouting talent, organizing shoot logistics and working closely with the videographer to finalize edits as needed. Other duties include project managing the non video related aspects of the project including: research report, focus groups and marketing plan, remain on track and completed by the deadline. The successful candidate will have experience producing/publishing video content, creating media, digital storytelling and creating online content that challenges the dominant narrative of communities of color in the media. Successful candidates will have a zest for using tech as a tool for social change, social media, Google Docs and other tools. This is a position that requires meetings and co-working in Oakland, California, and is not suitable for a remote worker.

Scope of Work
  • Work with the team to plan and then storyboard, schedule and produce an online video library of 7-10 video shorts, 10 minutes in length each
  • Create storyboards for each short, along with scripts, and provide final edits to the videographer
  • Create timescales and ensure project stays within the designated budget
  • Liaise with participants and the creative team to ensure projects run smoothly
  • Present work to Chief Innovation Officer and work together to ensure great product outcomes
  • Participate in design feedback sessions with youth participants and team
  • Collaborate with other team members and delegate tasks accordingly
  • Structure projects and devise efficient processes and sign offs
  • Support documentation and writing up of work and content as part of both internal documentation and outward facing materials including: website copy, curriculum and white paper
  • Provide knowledgeable creative input to all campaigns

REQUIREMENTS

The Videographer will work with the Associate Producer/Project Manager, Chief Innovation Officer and a team of consultants to shoot, edit and create an online video "

The role will include participating in a user centered design training with the wider team to co-create a design plan for the project.  The videographer will shoot footage and assist in editing. The videographer will accomplish the bulk of the technical tasks related to production and post-production. They will transport, set up, and operate equipment; and assist with staging, set preparation and dressing. The videographer will work closely with the creative director to execute the concept through to completion. The successful candidate will have experience producing/publishing video content, creating media, digital storytelling and creating online content that challenges the dominant narrative of communities of color in the media. Successful candidates will have a zest for using tech as a tool for social change, social media, Google Docs and other tools.

Scope of Work:
1. Video Pre-Production:


  • Work with wider team to design project and propose ideas and topics for video
  • Participate in content production meetings
  • Assist in the content development and message strategy
  • Utilize video script writing fundamentals
  • Set and maintain a production schedule prior to shoot

2. Field Video Production:
  • Records material for content using professional video cameras and still cameras
  • Follows production schedule collaborating with clients for revisions as needed
  • Sets up shoot including lighting, sound and other technical details
  • Collects b-roll footage of as well as interviews

3. Video Post Production Skills:
  • Create 7 - 10, 10 minute shorts from concept to post production
  • Performs non-linear editing using Final Cut or Adobe Premiere software
  • Designs after effects as needed including motion graphics, layout, and animation (optional)
  • Prepare video for multimedia formats including web, and other digital distribution medium
  • Ensure that all videos meet the needs of a varying audience of ability through the use of captioning and other forms as needed
  • Encode and archive online videos

REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience with advanced multimedia storytelling techniques on multiple platforms  
  • Exceptional core video-journalism skills, including a high command of video, sound, camera, lights, computers and software used to produce visual and audio journalism is required.
  • Knowledge of social media and how to engage audiences on digital platforms in the public space is essential to this role.  
  • The Videographer must demonstrate a high command of video techniques through sophisticated craftsmanship.  
  • Competency in videography principles from scripting through final editing and show proficiency with branding guidelines using video motion software such as Motion, and or After Effects, Premiere and Final Cut Pro in an Apple Mac environment.  
  • Excellent technical knowledge of non-broadcast video equipment  Apple Mac editing environment knowledge and experience
  • A full knowledge of digital production processes
  • An in-depth understanding of both technical and creative processes

Work will be in Oakland, with some on-location shooting around the Bay area.

Physical Characteristics:  
This position requires sitting for long periods of time, as well as some bending and stooping when filming and working with files. This position does have some limited lifting involved but not more than 20 pounds at a time. Quite a bit of finger/hand dexterity is involved in regards to operating cameras, typing and/or filing.
