Empower youth. Repair the pipeline.

Hack the Hood, an award winning non-profit that introduces low income youth of color to careers in tech by hiring and training them to build websites in their own communities, is looking to expand its impact throughout Northern California and elsewhere.

The Hack the Hood boot camp takes young people who usually have more experience consuming tech than producing tech and immerses them in a 120 hour program in which they learn tech and coding skills, work with tech professionals, and come to see themselves in tech careers—and have a plan how to get there.  Over the 6-7 week program, young people practice the skills they are learning by serving as web developers and consultants for real-world local small businesses and community organizations in their community. They do this work in partnership with local tech company mentors who advise on development and design, local business networks who provide clients, and city governments that help with youth stipends and local awareness.

We train and support partners to run the program themselves, providing them with curriculum, training, technical assistance, mentor and small business outreach training, fundraising support,  evaluation, best practices data and a regional network of practitioners to learn from. Take a look at some of our current partners.

Ideal partner organizations bring these attributes to the partnership:
  • focus on working with low income youth of color through a variety of services and programs,
  • demonstrated ability to keep youth engaged using youth empowerment principles,
  • strong relationships with local government and local small business networks,
  • facilities that lend themselves to Hack the Hood Boot Camps,
  • and strong organizational capacity, including the ability to fund or raise funds for the Boot Camp.
